description
This characteristic scene from Antun Masle's world is actually a flash in his unique imagination, articulated in a very original way with painting tools, which made him one of the most interesting and prominent representatives of the Dubrovnik coloristic painting of the 20th century. Along with Dulčić, he was certainly the most playful representative of that circle. He was born in 1919 in Orašac near Dubrovnik. He obtained his art education at the Academy in Zagreb, but returned to Dubrovnik in 1945, where he worked as an art teacher and met his end in 1967. He also spent time in Paris, where he studied the masters of modernism - he got acquainted with the procedures of Matisse, Chagall, Rouault, Dubuffet. He compared them with his own painting inclinations, taking a little from each and fitting them into his specific expression characterized by impasto spreads and simplified forms. He translated his world into it, especially his homeland that accompanied him throughout his life. He painted mostly his native Orašac, and then Dubrovnik and all the towns and bays in the vicinity of Dubrovnik. This painting of the bay Slano also belongs to this, typical, Masle's topography of the Dubrovnik coastline. With childlike simplicity and Fauvist immediacy, Masle shows us several characteristic elements of Mediterranean scenography - a bell tower, cypresses, boats. Everything is given in an energetic, agitated stroke, but the painting exudes peace due to its simple color harmony. Without strong accentuations and compositional eccentricities (the composition is also very calm, with a tower that dominates the surrounding building surfaces and marks its center, slightly moved to the left from the center of the image, achieving a discreet and necessary dynamism) a scene full of simplicity, cheerfulness, and specific enthusiasm for reality is achieved, obtained with well studied elements of painting expressive means. That is why this, like many of Masle's paintings, is really a flash, that is, an instantaneous insight into the painter's sensibility and experience, into his childhood and maturity at the same time.
