- Painter Ivan Rabuzin was born in Ključ in 1921 and died in Varaždin in 2008. He was a self-taught painter, one of the representatives of the Croatian naïve art. He is known for his paintings of hills in pastel colors, in which he repeats the structure of the circle, constructing a landscape and a specific vision of nature. His paintings had a wide audience around the world. In addition to Croatia, he exhibited all over Europe, and achieved two ceremonial curtains in Japan. His landscapes are usually dominated by a large sun, as is the case with this painting. Minuscule flower forms in the lower zone, and rounded hills dominated by tree forms create harmony in the structure of the painting. The upper zone is dominated by the sun behind the clouds, of pale yellow color. It is the light and the main accent to which all the tones of the painting are adjusted. The specificity of Rabuzin's landscapes, which are mostly variations of the relationship of clouds, sun, hills, trees, and flowers, reduced to repetitive forms, is unique to our naïve art. Unlike most of our naïve artists, Rabuzin does not portray genre scenes from peasant life, does not provide social commentary, nor does he translate rural culture and folk traditions into a surreal register. His paintings are full of pure pleasure in the nature of the Zagorje hills and their simple beauty. FG
