description
Ivo Friščić was born in Veliki Korenov near Bjelovar in 1937, and died in Zagreb in 1993. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in 1965, after which he was an associate of the Master's Workshop of Krsto Hegedušić. His painting ranged from geometric abstraction to hyperrealism. He was fascinated by all elements of contemporary civilization. For example: he found inspiration for geometric compositions in the aesthetics of machinery, and motorcycles were a common motif in his hyper-realistic canvases. Hampovica is a village near Đurđevac. The landscape around it is depicted by Friščić in this oil on plywood. What is characteristic of this painting and for the work of Ivo Friščić and for the painting of the 1950s is the synthesis of form. The painter transformed inspiration from nature into several planes of almost abstract expression. The detaching from the motif, or recognizable scenes and the attempt to decompose reality into striking elements of visual form are characteristic for the opus of Ivo Friščić. Even in later, hyper-realistic paintings, he is not interested in reproducing reality, but in its alienation by translating it into a painting language. This unusual landscape of dark tones represents a concise insight into Friščić's creative methods and preoccupations. FG
