description
Đuro Pulitika (Bosanka near Dubrovnik, 1922 – Dubrovnik, 2006) was a Croatian painter who, alongside Antun Maslo and Ivo Dulčić, forms the Dubrovnik painting trio. He was introduced to the craft of painting by Kosta Strajnić as a young man. He enrolled but never finished the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, where he learned about painting from Zlatko Šulentić, Ljubo Babić, and Krsto Hegedušić. He finished the school of Applied Arts in Herceg Novi in 1950. He exhibited at over 40 solo exhibitions, with his first exhibition taking place in Dubrovnik in 1953. He received the "Vladimir Nazor" award for his lifetime achievements. His works are marked by vivid colorism, simple surfaces, and thick applications of paint. He often painted Dubrovnik landscapes and two-dimensional nudes in bright colors. His time in Zagreb during his youth is manifested in his work through a fading of trembling brushstrokes and appearance of heavy and straight lines. In the 60s, monotypes in the spirit of lyrical abstraction dominated. From then on, he painted more freely and in the 1980s he created large dimension landscapes. In his paintings, nudes and biblical motifs of intense colors appeared. Pulitika's oil on canvas Landscape is characteristic precisely for its depiction of a landscape dominated by a hill in the center of which are a few buildings among which a church is recognizable. Various round bushes of red-yellow color grow on the stone hill. Blue color prevails on the canvas - the sky and the sea are blue, as well as the rocks.
