description
The unique and unusual personality of Vasko Lipovac has left an important body of work in Croatian art, recognizable, among other things, for his paintings of Mediterranean motifs - stylized ships and sailors, as well as marine (seascape) scenes. Lipovac was born in Škaljari near Kotor in 1931, and died in Split in 2006. He graduated from the Academy of Applied Arts in Zagreb in 1955, and then collaborated with the Master Workshop of Krsto Hegedušić. In his artistic expression (which includes paintings and sculpture), he synthesizes forms almost to the point of abstraction. The reality he depicts in his paintings often reduces to distinct fields of tone and successfully transmitted Croatian tradition of marine painting to the second half of the 20th century, renewing it with regard to the tendencies of post-war art towards condensing of form and depicted content (it should also be mentioned that Lipovac, in the spirit of the time, also made abstract paintings and graphics in the late 1950s). This depiction of the open sea with islands represents a mature achievement of Vasko Lipovac, wherein his perception of tonal treatment of areas (especially visible on the island or part of distant land, shrouded in blue-grey haze), and his stylization of seen reality, stand out. Square format is frequent in Lipovac's work. Uniform (or, in this case, almost uniform - 50 x 60 cm.) dimensions of the painting sides, emphasis the tranquillity of the open sea depicted. The coloristic-gestural accent of green and yellow in the bottom right corner of the painting serves as a counterpoint to the dominant calming blue and also speaks in favor of Lipovac's refined sense for composition.
