- Marijan Trepše (Zagreb, 1897. - Zagreb, 1964.) was a Croatian painter, printmaker, and set designer, significant in the period of Expressionism, between the two world wars. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts under Bela Čikoš-Sesija, then perfected his skills in Prague and Paris. He was part of an informal group of four with Uzelac, Gecan, and Varlaj, and participated in the exhibitions of the Spring Salon introducing Sezannistic Expressionism as the dominant direction and pointing out the huge influence of the prematurely deceased Miroslav Kraljević. He taught in Zagreb and gradually moved away from Expressionism and approached classicist tendencies. He often created in watercolour, constructing coastal landscapes and city views, as well as still lifes. He also made a significant mark with his graphic works and produced stained glass windows, of which it is worth mentioning "Golgotha" in the chapel of the Wounded Jesus in Zagreb's Ilica. The artwork "Two Acts d'apres Gauguin" is signed in the lower left corner and was created in the second half of the 1920s. Tempera and gouache on paper corresponds to this period of Trepše's work because it depicts female nudes in nature, with emphasized colorism. At the center are two monumentalized female figures, almost sculptural in the plasticity of their volumes. One figure is sitting with crossed arms and legs, and the other is shown in a crouched position, turned away. Both figures are stylized, with clear contours, warm skin tones. MČ
