- Clement Menci Crnčić (Bruck na Muri, 1865. - Zagreb, 1930.) was the first formally trained Croatian graphic artist, best known for his landscape paintings, especially seascapes. He studied painting in Vienna and Munich. Isidore Kršnjavi recognized his talent for graphics and sent him to study in Vienna with William Unger. During this study, Crnčić received the Füger Gold Medal for the best work and a special award from the Academy. In 1903, he founded a private painting school with Bela Čikoš Sesija, which would evolve into today's Zagreb Academy of Fine Arts. During his life, he lived in many cities, and traveled, especially with Milan Šenoa and Oton Iveković. Many of his works were destroyed in a fire that broke out in his studio in 1927. Crnčić's early phase was dominated by portraits and works influenced by the Munich Realist School. He then began to create seascapes and coastal landscapes, and the sea would remain a constant motif in his repertoire. The oil on canvas "Marina" is signed in the lower left corner. In it, Crnčić vividly depicts a calm sea with an open, lighter palette and delicate tones, achieving tranquility and the meditative nature of the atmosphere. The details point to a mature phase of work - the rocks and sea are not hyper-detailed, the sky and sea merge on a misty horizon, and with this depiction, Crnčić approaches Impressionism.
