description
Ivan Generalić (Hlebine, 1914 – Koprivnica 1992) was a prominent Croatian naive painter. From his childhood, he was engaged in agriculture, which he did not abandon even when he became a respected painter. At the age of 15, he met Krsto Hegedušić who began to teach him painting. Already in 1931, he exhibited at the Zemlja Artists Association exhibition. In Hlebine, he gathered talented young men and started the second generation of peasant painters of the Hlebine School. He has exhibited independently at more than 70 exhibitions (Paris, Brussels, New York ...) and several hundred group ones. He worked on theater set design and also illustrated poetry books. In his paintings and drawings, he depicted what he saw – the life of peasants, suffering, injustice, but also forgiveness and rural festivities. In the first period of creativity, the works are flat and stylized, mostly watercolors. Then, under the influence of the Zemlja group, socially and politically engaged themes with the typological depiction of figures prevail. During the Second World War, he tended to depict moods more and figures less, and depicted the landscape realistically, but also idealized and romantically. After the war, a period of realism followed - he transfers cooperatives and the construction of the destroyed onto canvas and glass. From the 1950s, Generalić became an internationally recognized artist. He paints still lifes, scenes with night scenes, allegorical representations. In the 60s, there is a greater narrative and theatricality in the works, strong gesturing of figures, and scenic shaping of landscapes. In the last period, Generalić simplifies and reduces to the essential, uses basic colors, and deals with the theme of the transience of life and inevitable death. The depiction of a gentle winter day created in 1981 on glass* is typical for Generalić. The figure of a peasant woman feeding two pigs is presented in a rustic and flat manner and placed in the foreground of the painting. The detailed landscape makes up the majority of the composition, with bountifully branched tree crowns standing out, reminiscent of corals. White roofs and snow on the ground contrast with the vibrant colors of the houses – yellow, blue, red.
