description
The name of Vasil Marinov is one of the main figures in the artistic life of Stara Zagora in the first decades of the 20th century. Together with Anton Mitov, Georgi Evstatiev and Atanas Mihov, they laid the foundations of the future city art gallery. He is one of the founders of the Society of South Bulgarian Artists in Plovdiv in 1911. Vasil Marinov entered the State Painting School in Sofia in 1897, where he studied painting with Prof. Yaroslav Veshin and Prof. Ivan Mrkvichka. There was formed his attitude towards genre painting, and later towards landscape and domestic composition. His idea of helping children who want to do art came into life in 1908, when he opened drawing courses together with Nikola Stoenchev. Children's portrait invariably became the object of his artistic interest. The painting "The boy with the llama" is a good example of Vasil Marinov's ability to create a realistic, academic portrait that carries a deep psychological characteristic. The portrayed boy is sitting cross-legged, holding a toy in his right hand. His gaze is serious and thoughtful. The pose, clothing and seriousness of the child show the spirit of the era - the post-war time in Bulgaria. The child is dressed in a light suit with a striped tie. Vasil Marinov was mobilized in the Balkans and the First World War, during which he created compositions on battle themes. Vasil Marinov's paintings are very rare, because they are scattered all over Bulgaria, and a large part of them burned during the bombings in Sofia. (S.N.)"
