Boris Georgiev was born in 1888 in the city of Varna. He is an artist who rises beyond the confines of his homeland and reaches global dimensions not only thanks to his painting talent, but also because of his life path. The travelling creator travels the world, meets and becomes friends with some of the most famous figures in history. He paints portraits of Einstein, Petar Danov, Ghandi, and Vladimir Dimitrov-Maistora. He devoted his life to the sublime. His strongly enigmatic personality is an object of interest for many researchers and art collectors, both in Bulgaria and in Italy, Munich, Russia, India and the USA. In 1937, he received the award "The Crown of Italy" for his entire oeuvre. He took his first steps in painting after leaving for St. Petersburg and studying at the art school led by the artist mystic and theorist, Nikolai Roerich. Perhaps under the influence of Roerich, the young Boris delves into themes related to the occult, mysticism and philosophy, which are at the core of his art and life. Later in 1909, he left for Munich, where he continued his art education with the artists Angelo Jank and Peter von Holm. Before starting his world travels and fully engaging in humanitarianism, in the years before World War I, Georgiev settled in the high Italian Alps among the shepherds of Mount Lefre in Trentino, Northern Italy. He made this decision to escape the city and society that have "nothing spiritual left". He despises the way the artist is seen as a beggar and prefers this escape from reality, which at least will preserve his soul, despite the poverty in which he would have to live. A companion and inspiration for Boris Georgiev is invariably his dear sister Katya, who lived with him until her death in 1917. The time spent with her in the mountains is one of the few moments of sheer happiness and bliss for the artist. Thus life in the romantic beauty of the Alps strongly influenced this creative period of Georgiev. There he created the paintings "Ave Natura!, 1914", "Katya, 1914", "World Sorrow, 1914", "Hut of Happiness, 1913", and "Winter, 1916". The technique chosen by Boris Georgiev remained colored pencils on paper, which give airiness and fairy tale to his landscapes and portraits. His symbolist approach transports viewers to places almost alien to the human world. The constant mixing of the spiritual with the physical reveals Georgiev's delicate sensitivity and humanity. At the basis of his philosophy of art is his hate for the idea: "Art for art's sake". Georgiev believes that the artist is not such by profession, but something more. The artist is the conductor of higher divine ideals and his hand is only a tool of that which cannot be named, cannot be seen, but only felt. The rhythm and purity of the line outweigh the grandeur and bright color, serving as an escape from the fast-paced city life and lead us into the corners of paradise recreated on the artist's canvas. The painting "Hut in the Alps" takes us back to Boris Georgieff's most joyful moments in the hut where he lived with his sister Katya. The focus of the snowy composition is his sister's figure, centrally placed, clearing the path to the small cozy house behind her, surrounded by the fairy landscape of the soft hills covered with fluffy snow and the peaks of the sturdy mountains in the distance . Interesting is the dedication located at the bottom right of the picture: "In segno di profonda riconoscenza dedico al amico buono Worthington questo umilo rocondo della nostra via nello montagne del Trentino", trans. from Italian: "As a sign of deep gratitude, I dedicate this humble reminder of our life in the mountains of Trentino to my dear friend Worthington." Although the particular Mr. Worthington could not be precisely named, we can presume, referring to one of the letters of Boris Georgiev to Katya, written on March 5, 1916, that he is one of Georgiev's English friends. The letter says: "Such people are exactly V. Osip., the American Wear, and especially the Englishman who is an extraordinarily noble and exalted soul." Boris Georgiev died in 1962 at the age of 73 in Florence. He was buried next to his muse and eternal companion, Katya, according to his wish. The artist's creativity and mission continue to inspire and influence humanity to this day. The city art gallery in Georgiev's hometown, Varna, bears his name. A collection of works by the artist were donated to the gallery by the adopted daughter of the artist, Virginia Giacometti-Georgieff. (S.Y.)
