description
The artist Nyagul Stanchev comes from an old Karlovo family, which also produced two other great Bulgarian artists – one is his father, Hristo Stanchev (1870-1950), who is remembered in the history of Bulgarian art for his painting "On the Field" from 1936. The other is Genko Genkov, whose father was a cousin of Nyagul Stanchev. Nyagul Stanchev was born in 1900 in Plovdiv to the family of Hristo and Olga Stanchev. With the support of his father, who is remembered by his descendants as a very noble person, the young Nyagul naturally turned to art. He graduated in 1925 from the Sofia Academy of Arts with a degree in “Painting” under Professor Nikola Marinov and Professor Nikola Ganushev. He worked in the genres of portrait, landscape, and figurative composition, particularly in the area of realistic landscape – a key focus for artists of his generation. His entire creative and life journey took place in Plovdiv, where he died in 1964. The artist’s overall body of work follows the traditions of classical realistic painting – portraying old Bulgarian towns, lyrical natural landscapes, but most impressively, his portraiture. He created portraits of his father, Hristo Stanchev, Tsanko Lavrenov, and other notable personalities. However, his portraits of children are the most emotionally charged and finely psychological part of his work. "Portrait of a Boy" is a brilliant example of a masterfully crafted portrait, built sparingly, with a highly accurate depiction of the facial features. The child has beautiful, well-defined features – large, thoughtful eyes, slightly raised eyebrows, a snub nose, and expressive lips. The complex psychological state of the child is captured – holding three chrysanthemums, but his gaze is not directed at them. Instead, it is turned inward, towards a memory and a deep emotional experience. A moment of solitude is caught, where the boy is alone with his thoughts – likely not easy for his young age. And this is why this portrait evokes sympathy, empathy, and concern. "Portrait of a Boy" contains all the best qualities of the classical portrait within the traditions of European painting. Nyagul Stanchev’s works are an exceptional rarity in the art market, especially such an exceptional children’s portrait. (S.N.)
