description
Dimitar Kazakov's creativity has been a subject of great interest from the public and collectors in Bulgaria and abroad during his lifetime. His exhibitions were presented in Paris, Tokyo, New York, and others. Even today, he is one of the most sought-after and collected authors. Many studies and biographical books are dedicated to his work. Dimitar Kazakov is a colourful person. He calls himself a "gladiator with a sharp sword". His nickname "Nero" comes from the following incident: "... There was the coupon system and we were living in the attic of the Academy with Todor Baltev. I educated myself continuously in the workshops of the Academy. I was also a fireman... Then my nickname Nero came up. As we were throwing coal into the furnace, Todor Baltev told me: "You have a heart like Nero". And it stayed that way...". (Aksinia Djurova, "The Myth Dimitar Kazakov Nero", 2003). Throughout his life, the artist remains deeply connected with the earth and our traditional culture. He creates a magical world in which memories from his native village Tsarski izvor, myths, and legends from national folklore, projections of ancient cultures, and civilizations intertwine. Without hiding his affinity for the Orthodox iconographic tradition, he draws inspiration from the art of the Etruscans, Mycenae, Persia, Iran... "...The distance from the Kazanlak Tomb to the image of Desislava (in the Boyana Church) is not great. This distance, covered with millennia of archaeological layers, is my idol and my inspiration." (From a 1979 letter to Aksinia Djurova, "The Myth Dimitar Kazakov - Nero", 2003). The painting "Antique Composition" was created in 1980. Between 1978 and 1980 – the artist's strongest period, during which he exhibited a number of solo exhibitions. In it, all these components combine in an abstract-figurative imagery in which conventionally constructed figures float in weightless surreal space, immersed in earthy colours of golden ochre, brick red, warm brown and blue. Dimitar Kazakov is not tempted by the three-dimensional construction of the form. Every inch of the canvas is populated with characters and symbols – apples, maidens, birds, snakes, fountains in unusual angles, viewed at an unusual angle, placed in "inverted space" according to the author. Female faces arranged in a spherical composition, curiously looking at us or towards the sky, peek out from the painting. The woman – mother, creator, inspirer, fairy, is a main character in the paintings. Central themes are love, earth, nature, and its miracles. According to the author, the painting is a universe, a complex world, and an incessant source of life. "Antique Composition" is an emblematic painting of the artist's style. Dimitar Kazakov produces painting, graphics, drawings, ceramics, and wood carvings. He is one of the authors who shape the image of contemporary Bulgarian plastic culture and represent it outside the borders of Bulgaria. Dimitar Kazakov was born on June 22, 1933, in the village of Tsarski Izvor, Veliko Tarnovo. In 1951, he entered the first class of the Art School in Sofia. He graduated from the National Academy of Arts, specialty "Graphics" with Prof. Evtim Tomov in 1965. From 1965 to 1972 he lived and worked in Pazardzhik, where he was sent by distribution. In 1967, he received the Award of the Union of Bulgarian Artists for Graphics. From 1968, he was a regular member of the Union of Bulgarian Artists. In 1972, he left Pazardzhik and settled in the village of Bozhurishte near Sofia with his family. He worked as a staff artist at the Military Division in Bozhurishte until 1977. From 1978, he worked in freelance practice. He was often treated in hospitals and sanatoria due to asthma. He died on January 16, 1992, in his home in Bozhurishte. Between 1965 and 1990 Dimitar Kazakov regularly participates with paintings, watercolors and drawings in General Art Exhibitions, organized in Sofia, Berlin, Sao Paolo, Ankara, Washington, Paris, Düsseldorf, Tokyo, New York, Madrid, Basel, Nîmes and others. He presented over 40 solo exhibitions in Bulgaria and abroad. The artistic creations of Dimitar Kazakov – Nero are owned by the National Gallery, SGHG, HD Donation "Svetlin Rusev Collection" - Pleven, galleries in Pazardzhik, Stara Zagora, Sliven, Varna, Dobrich, Shumen, Targovishte, Pleven and Lovech, Specialized Museum of Woodcarving and Icon Painting Art - Tryavna and private collections.
