description
This work by a great Croatian painter and brilliant sculptor, particularly in the glass medium, belongs to the so-called Mostar period of the artist's creative period while he lived and worked in Mostar as a high school drawing professor from 1929 to 1940. It is worth pointing out that during those years Motika also studied in Paris (1930 and 1935) where he properly acquainted with contemporary style trends of the international L'École de Paris on Montmartre and Montparnasse, which left a far-reaching mark on his oeuvre. Quite a number of Motika's brilliant views of the Mostar promenade, railway station with bustling carriages in front, interiors with bouquets of flowers, Muslim women in sparkling costumes or vibrant scenes of industrious craftsmen of various trades radiate an irresistible "pure" light and impersonal lyricism of post-impressionist character that leaves few indifferent. In 1940, Motika was transferred to Zagreb, where he worked at the School of Applied Arts until his retirement in 1961, and after that he painted, experimented and created tirelessly in a wide field of visual media and material until his illness and inevitable departure. The painting "Carpenter in the Workshop", painted with subtly harmonized coloristic values, was exhibited at the painter's retrospective in the Modern Gallery held from December 1974 to January 1975 and was reproduced in the accompanying exhibition catalog (on the page without pagination) and included in the list of exhibits under catalog number 91 on p. 252.
