description
Hills with oversized flowers, without animals or people, painted mostly in pastel colors, and shapes constructed from circles, are characteristic for the opus of Ivan Rabuzin (1921. - 2008.) a naive painter from Croatian Hrvatsko Zagorje. We are talking about naive art inspired by the real landscape of Zagorje hills, which are transformed into idyllic and sometimes surreal (due to unnaturally large flowers) nature on the canvases. Very mild, pastel coloring, the rhythm of circular shapes that repeat, as well as the softness of the texture of his paintings that contribute short brush strokes he uses, suggest that Rabuzin's scenes are located in areas of enhanced imagination. This painting of a simple, symmetrical composition, with two huge flowers on each side of the hill in the middle, and one which, like the sun, rises behind the hill, is also a typical Rabuzin's fantastic vision of nature. Rabuzin's opus represents the escapist part of the Croatian naive creativity. Namely, unlike the naive artists who painted the real world, pointing out social problems of the village and the daily life of its residents (Generalić, Virius, Mraz, Večenaj, Kovačić), Rabuzin turns to the unreal, idealized landscape without people. What interests him is balance, rhythm and tonal composition of parts of the painting, i.e., the bare elements of painting, which makes his thinking close to the poetics of abstract art (although he never abandons reference to the known world, i.e., nature). The silence of Rabuzin's hills and flowers in this painting radiates from careful tonal painting of light that illuminates them and their geometric balance, simultaneously strict in composition and soft in texture.
