description
Jules Pascin (1885–1930) is one of the brightest artists of the Paris School in the first half of the 20th century. Born as Julius Mordecai Pincas in Vidin, Pascin leaves a significant mark in art with his tender, sensitive, and colorful works. Pascin works in various genres, including portrait, figurative composition, and landscape, with the main theme in his work remaining the female images. His women, depicted in soulful, intimate, and often erotic moments, are represented with exceptional delicacy and emotional depth. His color is soft and pastel, the lines are smooth and expressive, giving the works a sense of physical and emotional delicacy as well as vulnerability. In the work "Hermin David and her friends", Pascin paints his wife in an exceptionally bright, colorful, and fashionable environment. Here, the artist pays attention to both the accents of the clothes and hats of the three women and the refined poses they take in the open setting of the park. In the background, you can see two more stylishly dressed women who are walking elegantly through the park's greenery. Pascin draws enormous inspiration from life in Paris - the city that becomes his home and a place for creativity from 1905 to 1914. Influenced by the local culture and artistic circles he falls into, the Bulgarian artist conveys in his art the sense of high fashion, female beauty, and the spirituality of the open green spaces of the great city. Though the work "Hermin David and her friends" was created in 1917, when the artist already lives in the States, his work retains all these Parisian elements of the female image and style, which are in contrast to the other strongly erotic images of the naked female body, which are characteristic of his work. In the work from 1917, Pascin abaicates the erotic nudity and foregrounds the pursuit of the beauty of women's public appearance in big cosmopolitan cities in the early 20th century. (М.З.)

provenance
The collection of Samuel Josefowitz (1921-2015), Puy, from 1962, then passed on by inheritance to the current owners. Samuel Josefowitz is an American entrepreneur, the founder of the "Concert Hall Society" and one of the greatest collectors of the twentieth century. Josefowitz showed a particular interest in the engravings of the old masters and the French paintings and engravings from the end of the 19th century, especially those of the Pont-Aven school. Born in Lithuania, his family moved to the USA at the end of the 1930s, where he was educated and trained as a chemical engineer. Later in his life he divided his time between his homes in Switzerland, near Lausanne, and in Whitchurch-on-Thames, Great Britain. Coming from a family of great entrepreneurs, he and his brother David (a collector of German expressionist paintings) founded the "Concert Hall Society" - an innovative company for the distribution of long-playing records through the mail, which turns into a highly successful industry. Samuel bought his first Picasso print at the age of 16 and began collecting French paintings in the 1950s. A chance meeting with print dealer Ira Gale in 1968 led him to build an exceptional collection of early prints, especially those of Durer and Rembrandt. He is a generous supporter of the department of prints and drawings (the Jacques Bellange exhibition in 1997 was based on his collection) and donated funds to assist the digitization project of the British Museum in the 90s.
